How do equine diseases--and the horses that carry them--get into the United States? Sometimes they just walk in. That's what happened in Texas recently. The Texas Animal Health Commission is reporting that a herd of 12 horses crossed the Rio Grande River from Mexico into Texas. Upon examination, ten of the horses were found to be infected with equine piroplasmosis, a tick-borne disease that is not widely found in the United States.
